Jean Meslier entered the clergy against his will. He became the priest of a small village in the Ardennes, where during the day he helped his parishioners with their tasks and supported them both morally and financially, mainly against the local lord. At night, he conducted research on religions to demonstrate their falsehood and the nonexistence of God. With the help of his cousin, with whom he had a passionate love affair, he wrote the first revolutionary treatise on atheism, intended to be read after his death.
